EASTERN CAPE – A 62-year-old suspect will appear before the Ngcobo Magistrate’s Court on Monday 24 August on allegations of attacking police, attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The suspect was arrested during a joint operation in Kuntsimbini Locality, Qulunqu Administration area, Ngcobo, by Mthatha Public Order Police (POP) and Provincial Crime Intelligence (CI) at about 22:15 on Friday 21 August.

Eastern Cape police said in statement that the intelligence-driven operation was initiated in response to a high stocktheft rate in the area.

Police allegedly introduced themselves and requested permission to enter the target house. The suspect then allegedly began shooting inside the house, before opening his burglar door and shooting at police.

One police official was hit in the left shoulder. A bulletproof vest saved the official from a possibly fatal injury.

During a search, police found a 9mm Norinco pistol with its serial number intact, ammunition, one 9mm cartridge, one black holster and one projectile. The suspect was arrested at the scene.

District Commissioner Major General Rudolph Adolph commended the joint effort by SAPS unit members in upholding the commitment to ensuring a safe and secure environment for all.
