Three Parow residents recognised for community service and dedication

Ardela van Niekerk, subcouncil 6 acting manager and subcouncil 4 manager, Roger Cannon, ward 2 councillor, Bronwyn Andrews, and Mercia Kleinsmith, subcouncil 6 chair.

Three community leaders from Parow were recognised at the Subcouncil 6 Civic Honour Awards held on Thursday 16 April. The three were honoured for their dedication and impactful work in their communities, says one recipient, Bronwyn Andrews.

Andrews was honoured along with Leon van Eeden, former chair of the Parow North Lower Neighbourhood Watch who was honoured posthumously, and Tinus van der Westhuizen, Parow North Lower Neighbourhood Watch patrol captain. Deborah van Eeden accepted the award on behalf of her late husband.

The awards was hosted by the City of Cape Town.

Roger Cannon, Ward 2 councillor, says all three recipients are from his ward. “Leon used to do patrols at night with his dog, but passed on two months ago. Tinus is a patrol captain, but is also a paramedic. Serving and helping others come naturally to him, and he knows how to secure accident sites. Whenever something happens, he is always first on site.”

“Andrews helps us a lot with our ward programmes, including the Heritage Day programme in September,” says Cannon.

He said he honoured those who contribute to the community.

Andrews received recognition in the Cultural Affairs category for Ward 2. She was also acknowledged for her ongoing commitment to preserving culture, empowering communities, and driving initiatives that promote unity and social upliftment. Andrews, who does a lot of her work in Parow Park, is currently the chief executive and founder of Xam For Our Peoples Foundation, a non-profit company (NPC). Speaking after the ceremony, she expressed gratitude for the recognition, noting that the award reflects not only her work but the collective effort of the community.

“All nominees and winners were applauded for their passion, dedication, and service. The evening served as a reminder of the importance of active citizenship and the positive impact individuals can have when working together.

“Congratulations to all recipients on their well deserved achievements,” Andrews says.
