A 16-year-old has been arrested and charged with murder after a 33-year-old man was killed in a stone-throwing attack in Bellville South on Saturday.
The victim, who was visiting his girlfriend, died after being struck by stones on Abdurahman Street at approximately 12:45 on Saturday 4 April. He was declared dead at the scene.
Bellville South police confirmed a registered murder case and arrested the teenage suspect in connection with the death. The accused appeared in Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Monday 6 April, facing a murder charge.
Community calls for action
Michelle Cecil, a representative of the Bellville South Community Policing Forum (CPF), expressed concern about the escalating violence involving minors.
“It’s sad that these young kids throw stones as a way to hurt each other,” Cecil said. “These kids are minors holding our area hostage.”

She warned that innocent people are at risk as stone-throwers do not discriminate between targets. “Innocent people can get killed because they don’t worry which cars drive past or people walking the roads,” she said.
The CPF has extended condolences to the bereaved families and urged community members to come forward with information.
“Those responsible must be brought to justice and face the full might of the law,” the CPF said in a statement.
Cecil called for community unity in addressing the problem: “People need to make statements so they know who it is. Don’t be quiet. Let’s stand together.”
Witnesses are asked to contact Constable Victor at 021 950 1306/8.
