Bellville South police have launched a murder investigation after a 48-year-old man was shot and killed on Sunday morning.

The shooting happened at about 08:50 on Sunday 19 July at the corner of William Hartel and Zimri Street in Bellville South.

Western Cape police spokesperson Thembakazi Mpendukana said officers responded to the scene, where the victim was found with fatal gunshot wounds.

“The victim, a 48-year-old male, was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel,” she said.

Police have opened a murder case for further investigation.

The motive for the shooting remains unknown and no arrests had been made at the time of publication.

The incident has left the Bellville South community reeling, with the shooting taking place while many residents were travelling to or attending church services on Sunday morning.

In a statement, the Bellville South Community Policing Forum (CPF) expressed its condolences to the victim’s family, friends and loved ones. The CPF also thanked members of SAPS, Law Enforcement and emergency medical services for their swift response in securing the crime scene and ensuring the safety of the public.

The CPF appealed to residents not to circulate false or unverified information while the investigation is under way and urged the community to allow police the opportunity to conduct a thorough investigation.
