A very successful neighbourhood clean-up operation in celebration of Mandela Day was held on Saturday 18 July in the Racecourse neighbourhood in Durbanville.

As part of their commitment to the safety of their neighbourhood, Racecourse Neighbourhood Watch (RCNW) patrollers joined forces with volunteers from Mould Empower Serve (MES) to devote 67 minutes on Mandela Day to a thorough clean-up of the areas surrounding the Durbanville Racecourse.

They cleaned from Aandblom Field through to Tindale Reservoir, Bowlers Avenue and the Racecourse parking area, as well as the green belt areas from St John’s Street to High Street.

Safety concerns

“As an active group of volunteers concerned with the safety of residential areas surrounding Durbanville Racecourse, the RCNW feels strongly that a cleaner community is a safer one,” says Johan Matthee, vice-chair, who arranged the volunteers with MES.

“This inspired a team of RCNW patrollers to join forces with 12 volunteers from MES to do a thorough clean-up. The group divided into three teams to do a sweep of the areas that fall within the Zone 4 demarcation.

“The MES volunteers did a sterling job of supporting RCNW patrollers and collected a pile of black bags filled with litter — enough to fill a large van. They were rewarded with MES vouchers as a token of our appreciation.

“RCNW extends its heartfelt thanks to all who joined in this very successful operation,” Matthee says.

Soup evening

The RCNW is hosting a soup evening for residents in the Zone 4 area on Saturday, 25 July, at the Durbanville Bowling Club in Bowlers Avenue from 18:00 for 18:30. There will be a cash bar.

“The format is very casual — each family brings a pot of soup to share, with their own utensils. The intention is simply an opportunity to meet your fellow neighbours over a warm bowl of soup, and focus on networking for our mutual benefit with regard to safety measures,” he invites.
