A shadow was cast over the annual interschools derby between Fairmont High School in Durbanville and The Settlers High School in Bellville after an alleged incident of racism during a rugby match on Saturday.

The schools have appealed to their school communities in similar statements to refrain from sharing, commenting on, or spreading unverified information about the incident.

The rugby match at Fairmont High School, which was part of the two schools’ annual interschools derby, was stopped by the referee after a Fairmont player allegedly called a player of The Settlers the “K-word”.

In a video on TikTok, it can be heard that the referee called the coaches of both schools and stopped the match.

“I need both coaches. I am not going to tolerate this. I am calling this game off. I cannot be part of racism, guys,” he said.

‘Treated with utmost seriousness’

In her statement, Mari Schnehage, principal of Fairmont High School, addressed the school communities of both schools and said “the matter is being treated with the utmost seriousness and will be thoroughly investigated in accordance with the school’s policies, applicable legislation, and due process”.

“We respectfully appeal to all members of our school communities to refrain from sharing or commenting on unverified information, including content on social media, as this may escalate an already sensitive situation and compromise the integrity of the investigation.

Held legally liable

“Please be aware that you can be held legally liable for anything posted on social media as per legislation. We kindly ask for your patience and cooperation while the necessary processes are followed.

“We remain committed to ensuring that the matter is addressed fairly, objectively, and in the best interests of all learners involved.

“We thank you for your understanding, support, and commitment to maintaining the values of respect, dignity, and sportsmanship that both our schools uphold,” the statement read.

A similar statement was also posted on the website of The Settlers High School by the principal, the school management team and the School Governing Body.

The incident is being investigated by the Western Cape Education Department.
