The Mayor of Cape Town, Geordin Hill-Lewis, this week wished his alma mater, Edgemead High School, well ahead of their clash against Fairmont High School this coming weekend for the annual Derby Day.
The event takes place on Saturday 22 August.
Joel Erasmus, headmaster, told TygerBurger that the mayor is a proud Edgemead High School alumnus, and remains a regular presence on campus, often returning to support his former school.
Erasmus says Edgemead High is looking forward to travelling to Durbanville for the weekend’s fixtures, which will mark the end of the winter sports season. The school has 45 fixtures scheduled, with the annual clash against Fairmont High School regarded as one of the highlights of the sporting calendar, he says.
The excitement extends well beyond match day, with the school hosting an entire “Gees Week” in the build-up to the fixture.
Old boys’ rugby
“Our goal is to create a space where learners can play hard, enjoy themselves and experience the spirit and camaraderie that school sport is all about,” says Erasmus.
There has also been a strong drive to reconnect and involve Edgemead High’s past pupils. Last week, the school hosted its first old boys’ rugby match against Fairbairn College. According to the president of Goodwood Rugby Club, the event attracted what he believed was one of the biggest turnouts seen at the club’s fields, Erasmus explains.
In his message of support to the school, Hill-Lewis, who also lives in the area, said it’s a huge weekend for all.
Go Edgemead!
“I want to call on all Edgemead High learners, Edgemead residents, everyone across the community; let us come out and support the Eagles. Support all the teams that are playing this week, starting now already, through this weekend at Fairmont on Saturday where it is going to be the big finale. Good luck, go Edgemead High, go Eagles. We are all backing you 100%. What a great school, we are so proud of our school,” he said.
Another prominent Edgemead High alumnus, Smile FM presenter Ryan O’Connor has also been an active supporter and promoter of activities at his former school, Erasmus says.
