The Cape Flats are reeling after another bloody weekend in which at least seven people were gunned down in ongoing gang violence.
In Delft, two people were shot and killed in an incident on Sunday evening in Atakora Street, N2 Gateway.
Dead on scene
According to police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg, Delft police registered two murder cases for investigation following the incident that occurred at about 20:50.
“Two men aged 30 and 32 were shot and fatally wounded. Police officers attended to the crime scene where they found the victims with gunshot wounds to their bodies. Both victims were declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation and no arrests have been made,” says Twigg.
In Wesbank, near Delft, four people were shot, with a 37-year-old died after suffering gunshot wounds to the head. Three victims — two women aged 43 and 50, and one man aged 60 — were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds.
Last week, police announced that more than 30 people were killed in the Western Cape in three days, including several mass shootings in Langa, Gugulethu, and Khayelitsha. The killings prompted the newly appointed Western Cape police commissioner, Lieutenant General Sizakele Dyantyi, to offer a reward of R200 000 for information that could lead to the arrest of the murderers.
‘Mommy, daar skiet hulle al weer’
TygerBurger visited Delft on Monday to speak to some residents about the ongoing violence. Delft resident Katy Booysen (pseudonym) told TygerBurger that she is afraid for the safety of three children. “I moved here after my divorce to be closer to family support, but now I am too scared to let my children play outside. My youngest will always tell me, ‘Mommy, daar skiet hulle al weer’ (Mommy, they are shooting again), and then we dive on the floor until the shooting stops. This is no way to live, but we have nowhere to go,” says Booysen.
Booysen’s neighbour, 76-year-old Koos Newman (pseudonym), says living in Delft is a daily battle. “I will never get used to this. We are even too scared to go to the day hospital to get our chronic medication. Every day could be your last, and that has got nothing to do with age,” he jokes. “If things continue this way, not many young people will reach my age.”
