The Matroosfontein Neighbourhood Watch, together with dedicated community volunteers, carried out a tree-pruning and clean-up project along the pedestrian walkway next to the local school.

Visibility

The project was undertaken with the permission and support of the school to improve visibility, enhance safety, and create a cleaner environment for learners, residents, and everyone using the pathway.

Thurston Cooper, chairperson of the neighbourhood watch, says the walkway has unfortunately been the scene of a number of robberies over the years. “Residents walking to work, churchgoers, schoolchildren, and children playing at Wembley Park have all used this route, while suspects have taken advantage of the overgrown vegetation and nearby buses to conceal themselves before targeting victims. By clearing the overgrown trees and vegetation, we have improved visibility and made the area safer for everyone,” says Cooper.

According to Cooper, they also took the opportunity to commemorate Mandela Day by encouraging members of the community to volunteer their time in the spirit of Nelson Mandela’s call to serve others. “It was inspiring to see residents come together to give back to their community and make a lasting difference. This initiative forms part of our ongoing commitment to crime prevention through community involvement. We believe that a clean, well-maintained environment encourages community pride and contributes to a safer neighbourhood.

Our sincere appreciation also goes to all the sponsors who generously donated refreshments and equipment, and to every volunteer who gave up their time and energy to make this project a success. Soup was also provided to members of the community.
