A group of around 30 concerned residents recently met with ward councillor Sue van der Linde to discuss ongoing security challenges and other issues affecting the community.

Residents of Waves Edge have welcomed news that funding has been allocated for the reinstatement of a fence along the R27, following growing concerns about crime and unrestricted access into the neighbourhood.

One of the main concerns raised was the disappearance of the fence along the R27, between the Vlei and Blaauwberg Road, which residents say has left the area vulnerable to criminal activity.

Residents raise alarm

The missing fence has opened direct access from the R27 onto Rubens Road and into Waves Edge, with residents warning that this has created an easy entry and exit route for criminals.

Resident Mike Beart said the lack of fencing had made the area more attractive to criminals.

“This has made the area a target for the criminal elements.”

Residents highlighted several recent incidents, including a murder, armed robbery and assaults on dog walkers.

They also raised concerns about the theft of Eskom power cables from Rubens Road on two occasions, with one getaway vehicle reportedly parked along the R27.

Beart said the reinstatement of the fence was needed not only for residential security but also for public safety.

“It is hoped that the re-erection of this fence can be given priority on the grounds of residential safety and security, as well as preventing pedestrians from crossing the R27 along this stretch of highway, putting themselves and motorists at risk.”

Fence funding welcomed

Van der Linde said funding has been allocated in the current financial year.

The announcement was welcomed by residents at the meeting, who said they hoped the project would finally become a reality.

Residents said the fence would be an important step towards improving security and controlling access into the area.

Van der Linde also provided an update on the sinkhole in Rubens Road, explaining that repair work is being addressed but will require extensive rebuilding. Due to the age of the drainage system, the repairs may extend further along Rubens Road.

The councillor said she would continue providing updates to residents in the coming months.

Other topics discussed included plans to improve overall management and safety in the Table View area through the establishment of a City Improvement District (CID), similar to the model already operating in Montague Gardens.

Residents also heard about possible plans to establish a facility aimed at assisting homeless people while providing opportunities for skills development, provided participants are willing to engage with the programme.

Concerns were raised about the increase in overnight sleepers in what is a popular tourist area.

Meanwhile, proactive residents have already started improving security through the installation of CCTV cameras around Waves Edge in partnership with 1STOP LIFE MED.

The meeting concluded after an hour of discussions, with residents expressing hope that the proposed projects would lead to meaningful improvements in safety, security and community management, Beart said.
