Kuils River Rugby Club beat Brackenfell Rugby Club 41-22 in the 2026 Super League A (SLA) Bottom 8 Final at City Park on Saturday 19 September, claiming the President’s Shield.
Club president Eon Gurah said before the match that the Bottom 8 campaign had been “an unexpected continuation to our 2026 Super League A campaign” that had “brought us to one final opportunity to finish this journey on our terms”.
Gurah said the team had “kept stepping up and earned their place in the SLA Bottom 8 Final”. He called on the players to play with pride and discipline. “Play for the badge. Play for the man beside you.”
He thanked the coaches, management, sponsors, donors and supporters, saying, “this moment belongs to all of us”.
The match was jokingly dubbed the “Boulevard Derby” in reference to Brackenfell Boulevard, which connects the two communities.
Club secretary Romeo Adams said Kuils River’s matchday squad included six players who are 20 years and younger, illustrating how young players are coming through and getting opportunities.
Flyhalf Tandile Hoyi was named Man of the Match.
Kuils River had finished ninth in the SLA league standings, level on 43 log points with UCT, who claimed the final Top 8 position on points difference. This placed Kuils River in the Bottom 8 knockout competition.
Commitment
Gurah said the result represented far more than a trophy for the club and the wider Kuils River community, but rather “resilience, growth and pride”.
He said the character, commitment and determination displayed by the players throughout the season were evidence of the growth the club continued to experience, despite the challenges faced “not only in Saturday’s final, but throughout the 2026 season”.
“We have often found ourselves carrying the tag of the underdogs in this league, but the power in that is the fact that we had nothing to lose, and more to gain,” Gurah said. “That is exactly the mindset we are taking forward.”
He extended a call to business owners in the Kuils River area to invest in and donate to the club.
