Motorists and residents across the Blaauwberg district can expect roadworks and possible delays as the City of Cape Town begins resurfacing roads in several suburbs.

The City’s Urban Mobility Directorate has started work in Rugby, Brooklyn, Milnerton, Summer Greens, Mamre, Protea Park, Melkbosstrand and Marconi Beam.

The work is taking place from 08:00 to 17:00, Monday to Saturday, and is scheduled to continue until Saturday 14 November, weather permitting and provided there are no unforeseen delays.

Roads across eight areas affected

In Rugby, resurfacing is taking place along Narwhal Street, Egret Street, Chamois Street and Palmetto Street.

Work in Brooklyn includes Kings Road, Wren Street, Alwin Street, Kalmah Street, Corah Street, Van der Stel Avenue and Fenwick Street.

In Milnerton, Langerman Avenue, Graaff Avenue and Norwood Road are among the roads affected, while work in Summer Greens includes Summer Greens Drive and the slip lane off Bosmansdam Road.

Resurfacing will also take place on Louwskloof Road in Mamre, Acacia Crescent and Aster Crescent in Protea Park, Wesfleur, and Beach Road and 6th Avenue in Melkbosstrand.

In Marconi Beam, work will take place on Omuramba Road between the Racecourse Road intersection and Bosmansdam Road.

Night work planned

Additional night work is scheduled in Melkbosstrand and Marconi Beam, with construction taking place between 19:30 and 05:30. City Mayco member for urban mobility Rob Quintas said regular road maintenance was necessary to keep roads in good condition and extend their lifespan.

“Regular road maintenance is necessary to keep our roads in good condition, extend their lifespan and, importantly, to keep Cape Town moving,” Quintas said.

He acknowledged that roadworks could cause disruption for residents and road users and urged motorists to plan ahead and allow additional travel time where necessary.

“We know that roadworks can cause some disruption to residents and road users, and we appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation while our teams undertake this necessary work,” he said.

Motorists urged to take care

Residents and road users have been advised to exercise caution when travelling through affected areas and to allow for possible delays.

The City said the maintenance programme was aimed at keeping roads in good condition and improving the lifespan of the existing road network.

Motorists are encouraged to plan their routes ahead of time and take extra care around construction areas while the work is under way.
