Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate is set to begin roadworks along the southbound lane of Plattekloof Road, between the intersections with Baronetcy Boulevard and Uys Krige Drive in Plattekloof, this week.

Night work is scheduled to commence on Monday 4 May, running until early June, between 19:00 and 05:30, Mondays to Fridays, weather permitting and provided there are no unforeseen delays. All lanes are scheduled to reopen to traffic by 06:00 on weekdays, the City of Cape Town says.

What the works involve

This week, the contractor will focus on kerbs and channels. The broader resurfacing works include:

  • Milling and removal of the existing asphalt surface and replacing it with hot-mix asphalt;
  • The removal of damaged kerbs and installation of new kerbs;
  • The replacement of selected and damaged channels, with re-alignment where needed;
  • The reinstatement of all road markings removed during the process.

The City has confirmed that the works form part of regular maintenance aimed at prolonging the longevity of the road network.

Why the work is being done at night

The work has been deliberately scheduled after hours to limit disruption to road users. Residents and business owners in the area should, however, expect some noise during working hours.

Rob Quintas, Mayco member for urban mobility, acknowledged that some inconvenience was unavoidable.

“Unfortunately, roadworks always come with some level of inconvenience, but this is very important maintenance work to ensure we keep Capetonians moving. The benefits of newly resurfaced roads include improved road safety conditions and riding quality and prolonging the longevity of the city’s road network. I thank residents and commuters for their support and patience while the work is underway,” said Quintas.

Advice for road users

Congestion is expected in the area. Road users are urged to use alternative routes or to allow for additional travelling time. Drivers are also reminded to:

  • Reduce their speed in and around the roadworks area;
  • Pay attention to road signs;
  • Look out for uneven road surfaces;
  • Be vigilant and mindful of construction workers on site.
