The Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) has instituted an internal disciplinary process against the individual accused of attempted murder after allegedly attacking a female student.
Waiting under bed
A chemical engineering student, Katlego Kgaswane (21), appeared in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday 16 September after allegedly waiting for a fellow student under her bed in the Orchard Residence in Belhar, before stabbing her. The incident happened on Wednesday 9 September 2026.
Lauren Kansley, spokesperson for CPUT, says they were present at court to ensure that the accused is not able to use a student residence address as a primary residence in any bail bid which he may launch.
“Our internal disciplinary matter will continue alongside the criminal one and his imminent suspension from CPUT will ensure that he is not able to return to residence nor classes. The necessary Counselling and Clinic services are activated to assist the victim,” says Kansley.
According to Kansley, with 40 000 staff and students in their campus community, they are well aware that incidents of gender-based violence are something which they must prepare for, since it is rife within greater society.
“One of the events which unfortunately had to be cancelled this year due to the student protest action was a GBV-focused workshop with the National Prosecuting Authority. This event aims to strengthen our responses to GBV incidents so that the cases have a greater chance of success at trial. Our focus now moves to the victim and supporting her as best as we can,” says Kansley.
No relation
On the Facebook page called CPUT 2026 First Years and NSFAS Enquiries, an anonymous user wrote that the suspect had been stalking the victim.
“Him and the girl he stabbed had no relation and never spoken before he went to her room while she was out, hid under her bed and waited for her to go to sleep and attacked her around 03:00. He stabbed her multiple times and it is by God’s given miracle that she is still alive,” wrote the person.
The accused will appear in court again on Friday for a bail application.
