Civil engineering work is underway at the Flandorp site in Table View after residents alerted ward 113 councillor Sue van der Linde to activity at the property.

Containers have been placed on the site and construction equipment, including a JCB, was operating on the land when Van der Linde visited.

The councillor said she had been contacted by residents on the morning of the activity and subsequently spoke to a person identifying himself as the site manager.

“He tells me that he does have approved civil plans to lay down the foundations of sewerage equipment, etc,” Van der Linde said.

City to confirm

She said she had already contacted the City of Cape Town to alert officials to the work and would seek confirmation of what had been approved.

“Obviously, I’m going to follow that up with the City. I have already emailed them this morning, alerting them to the activity here,” she said.

Van der Linde urged residents to remain patient while she sought further information from the City.

“But let’s find out what the actual story is from the City first,” she said.

“I ask residents, please, just do be patient. The minute I have an answer, I’ll put it out there.”

City confirms civil engineering work

An update on the site has since confirmed that the work currently being carried out is civil engineering work.

The City has granted conditional approval for certain aspects of the development, including the installation of a DPC barrier along the Pond 3 wall where it abuts the neighbouring boundary.

Approval has also been granted for the design, layout, specifications and details relating specifically to the water and sewer connections and external municipal services for the development, subject to conditions.

One of those conditions relates to the proposed private wastewater treatment package plant.

Approval for the plant still needs to be obtained from the relevant national and City of Cape Town departments.

The current approval therefore relates to specified civil and municipal service works, rather than representing unrestricted approval for all aspects of the development.

Van der Linde said she would continue monitoring the situation and providing residents with updates as more information becomes available.

The development has attracted attention from residents, making clarity around the scope of the approved work an important part of ongoing communication between the community, the councillor and the relevant authorities.
