The Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) says it is doing everything it can to assist a student who was recently stabbed by a fellow student.

Katlego Kgaswane appeared in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on a charge of attempted murder after sneaking into the room of a female student while she went to the bathroom. When she returned, the accused waited for her before pouncing and stabbing her multiple times. He was denied bail on Monday 29 September.

Brutal

CPUT spokesperson Lauren Kansley says the brutal assault on one of their students has received extraordinary attention and accommodation from the institution, focused on the health and safety of the victim.

“Ordinarily, someone in her position would have returned home for recovery and rehabilitation. However, this has not been possible because of the victim’s individual personal situation. Everyone, from our Dean of Students to Executive Management, has requested that special accommodations be made for her. This includes making funds available for private carers and liaising with court officials to ensure the alleged perpetrator is not able to return to residence — this saw the alleged perpetrator being denied bail this week,” says Kansley.

Liaising with physician

According to Kansley, the university is also liaising with the victim’s attending physician to assist with the necessary physiotherapy and medical requirements. “We are doing the best we can to help the young woman and all the necessary departments are working in tandem to help her,” she says.
