Franschhoek Pass remains closed indefinitely after May floods cause extensive damage

The historic Franschhoek Pass again sustained significant damage during the May floods, marking the latest setback for the popular scenic route which has been plagued by weather-related destruction for nearly three years.

The pass was initially closed as a precautionary measure after inspection teams identified several areas of concern that posed potential risks to road users.

Melt Botes, spokesperson for the Western Cape department of infrastructure, said since the closure, additional slope failures and slips have occurred along the route.

“While these newer slips are less severe than the major failures initially identified, they further reinforce the need to keep the pass closed whilst comprehensive assessments and repairs are undertaken,” Botes said.

The latest damage comes as a particularly bitter blow to the area, as extensive reparations and upgrades to the road were well underway following the 2023 floods which forced the pass to close for months.

Botes highlighted a particular area of concern at the bridge near the Theewaterskloof Dam.

“Although the damage may not be immediately visible to the untrained eye, sections beneath the roadway have been completely scoured away across the full width of the structure. In some areas, only a thin layer remains supporting the road surface, creating a significant safety risk,” he said.

Authorities have expressed concern that some cyclists continue to use the route despite the official closure.

“We are extremely concerned that some cyclists continue to use the route despite the official closure. The closure applies to all road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, light motor vehicles and heavy motor vehicles,” Botes said.

“Entering the closed area places individuals at serious risk and may also hamper ongoing assessment and repair activities.”

At this stage, there is no confirmed timeline for the reopening of Franschhoek Pass.

“The route should be regarded as closed until further notice,” Botes said.

He added that the major project already underway on the pass and route has not been adversely affected, apart from unavoidable weather-related delays.

“The newly identified slips and bridge damage are being treated as additional works that will need to be addressed as part of the broader recovery effort,” Botes said.

Franschhoek Pass, a vital link between the Cape Winelands, Theewaterskloof and the greater Overberg areas, has long been a favourite amongst tourists and locals alike for its scenic beauty and historical significance.
