The Franschhoek Pass has been closed indefinitely.

Franschhoek Pass is expected to remain closed for an extended period after sustaining significant damage during the recent Level 8 storm.

Mel Botes, spokesperson for the provincial infrastructure department, said assessments are under way to determine the full extent of the damage and the repairs required.

“Damage to the pass is significant and it will likely be closed for a while.”

The department is prioritising repairs across the provincial road network based on urgency, particularly in areas where communities have been completely cut off, Botes said, adding that repairs are carried out in three stages: restoring basic access, implementing temporary repairs and finally conducting permanent repairs as funding became available.

Road users must use alternative routes until further notice.

The pass was closed on Saturday 9 May.

Botes stressed the closures applied to all road users including pedestrians, motorcyclists and cyclists.

He could not confirm a reopening date as assessments are yet to be completed.

“Once this is done several processes will need to be undertaken, including designs, regulatory processes such as environmental approvals and funding.”
