Community is looking for suspects that ‘helped themeselves’ to cables

The ward councillor for Bonteheuwel has called on the public to help find three suspects caught on camera sawing electricity cables in Bonteheuwel.

Do you know these people? Please contact the City of Cape Town or your local police station if you recognise them.

In a video circulating online, the suspects can be seen standing on the roof of a building, using a hand saw to cut through the cables.Angus McKenzie says the suspects clearly thought the cables were part of a “help yourself” special. “We would like to pay them a visit and have a little chat but, first, we need your help identifying them and, more importantly, telling us where they live. If you recognise them, please send us the information via our tip-off channels. Let us find them before they find another cable,” says McKenzie.

Stand together

McKenzie says the community should stand together against vandalism and theft of infrastructure. “Besides the fact that it costs millions to repair, it causes problems for the community itself. Our community is under pressure as it stands, so we do not want people who live here causing more problems. I know that the community knows who the culprits are; they just need to come forward,” he says.

The City of Cape Town earlier said that it has spent more than R44 million in the first half of the year to repair damaged or stolen infrastructure.
