The Western Cape police confirmed that Delft police arrested a LEAP officer earlier this week for driving under the influence of alcohol after crashing into a shack.

Arrested and detained

Police spokesperson Thembakazi Mpendukana says a 31-year-old suspect was arrested and detained at Delft police station for driving under the influence and reckless driving. This follows an incident in which a LEAP vehicle crashed into an informal dwelling in Delft on Wednesday, 12 August.

“No injuries were reported,” says Mpendukana.

City of Cape Town law enforcement spokesperson Wayne Dyason confirmed the incident. “Just before 13:00, the City’s Law Enforcement Department was alerted to an incident involving an off-duty LEAP officer. Information at hand is that he veered off the road while driving a law enforcement bakkie and collided with an informal structure in Delft. The officer was arrested by the police on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol,” says Dyason.

According to Dyason, the matter will be dealt with in line with applicable City disciplinary procedures.
