Two people have died during mass celebrations in Mexico City after the national football team advanced to the next round of the 2026 World Cup, local authorities confirmed on Wednesday.
A woman (19) and a man (44) died of asphyxiation as more than one million people took to the streets following Mexico’s historic victory over Ecuador, according to the city’s health ministry.
The win marked Mexico’s first World Cup knockout victory since 1986, propelling the co-hosts into the round of 16.
Local media reported a possible third death, but authorities have not confirmed this.
The majority of celebrants gathered around the Angel of Independence monument in the capital, where crowd numbers exceeded one million, according to city government estimates.
