CIUDAD RODRIGO, Spain – A teenager died and several others were injured when a fountain collapsed during celebrations of Spain’s World Cup victory in the early hours of Monday morning.

The victim, a boy (13), died after the structure gave way under the weight of numerous people who had climbed onto it to celebrate Spain’s triumph in the football-mad nation.

Emergency services received calls shortly after 12:30 am local time reporting that a fountain had collapsed on multiple people in Ciudad Rodrigo, a municipality in western Spain. Another youth was injured in the incident.

The city hall of Ciudad Rodrigo expressed its sadness and offered condolences for the death of the boy in a Facebook post on Monday.

“What should have been a celebration of Spain’s team in the football World Cup turned into tragedy,” the municipality said, adding that several others were injured.

Spain claimed their first World Cup victory since 2010, sparking widespread celebrations across the country. The fountain collapsed under the weight of revellers who had gathered on the structure to mark the historic win.

Local authorities have not yet released further details about the extent of injuries sustained by others in the collapse or the condition of the injured youth.
