Ten die after bus bound for Zimbabwe overturns in Free State


TROMPSBURG – A fatal bus accident has claimed the lives of 10 people and left multiple survivors with injuries after it overturned last night – Thursday 30 July – on the N1 north of Trompsburg in the Free State. It is reported that the bus was travelling from Cape Town and bound for Zimbabwe. The road remains closed for traffic.

Mondli Mvambi, spokesperson for the Free State Department of Health, confirmed the fatalities and said that the deceased include children and adults. Their identities and genders are yet to be confirmed. The private bus reportedly overturned 24 km north of Trompsburg en route to Edenburg.

Mvambi confirmed that the bus was carrying approximately 78 passengers, with 66 suffering injuries. He said that the survivors who suffered minor injuries were referred to the Albert Nzula Hospital in Trompsburg for medical treatment. He said that five passengers sustained serious injuries and four who were in critical condition have been admitted for emergency medical treatment at the Pelonomi Trauma Hospital in Bloemfontein.

Motorists are advised to use the R717 as an alternative route as the N1 remains closed in both directions between Edenburg and Trompsburg due to the wreckage blocking the roadway.
