Trial date set for Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala on attempted murder charges


The trial of Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and three co-accused is set to begin on 20 July in the Johannesburg High Court.

Matlala, along with Musa Kekana, Tiego Floyd Mabusela and Tsakani Matlala, face 25 charges stemming from three separate shooting incidents allegedly committed between August 2022 and January 2024.

The charges include 11 counts of attempted murder. The State further alleges that the accused orchestrated a shooting, laundered money linked to the alleged plot, and used a fraudulent invoice to conceal the source of funds and mislead the court.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), counsel for Matlala intends to bring an application to compel the State to furnish outstanding previously requested particulars. This application is scheduled to be heard on 15 June.

Accused number five has indicated an intention to submit representations to the Office of the National Director of Public Prosecutions following the refusal of earlier representations by the Office of Director of Public Prosecutions.

The first, second and third accused remain in custody, whilst the bail of the fourth and fifth accused has been extended.

The NPA confirmed it is ready to proceed with the trial on the scheduled date.
