JOHANNESBURG – The Gauteng High Court has dismissed the bail appeal of controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, who faces serious charges including attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
Matlala’s legal team had appealed to the High Court after he was initially denied bail at the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court. However, the higher court upheld the lower court’s decision, ruling that releasing him would be contrary to the interests of justice.
The businessman faces a string of serious charges including attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, fraud, and attempting to defeat the ends of justice. The charges stem from alleged events that took place in Johannesburg between 12 and 17 October 2023.
According to the State’s case, Matlala allegedly conspired to kill his ex-girlfriend and media personality Tebogo Thobejane, and opening fire on Thobejane and two other complainants. The prosecution further alleges that Matlala laundered over R120,000 linked to the murder plot and submitted a fraudulent invoice in an attempt to conceal the origin of the funds and mislead the court.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomed the High Court’s decision. “The NPA welcomes the judgement and is of the view that the court made the right decision in denying Matlala bail, considering the severity of the charges and the risk to public safety and law enforcement officers, including the investigating officer and the prosecutors involved in the matter,” said Phindi Mjonondwane, NPA spokesperson.
The High Court found that Matlala poses multiple risks that justified keeping him in custody. The court determined he represents a flight risk, poses a danger to witnesses and the broader community, and that the State has built a substantial case against him.
Matlala is an alleged Big 5 cartel member and is also being linked to the R2-billion looting-scandal of Tembisa Hospital.
Matlala will remain in custody pending the continuation of his trial proceedings.
