FICKSBURG – A family hunting excursion in the Eastern Free State ended in tragedy when a 12-year-old girl from Krugersdorp was fatally shot on a farm near Ficksburg, resulting in the arrest of a man who now faces a charge of murder. The suspect is due to appear in court today.

The incident occurred on Friday 29 May at Franshoek Farm, where the child had accompanied adults participating in a hunting expedition. According to information released by the South African Police Service (SAPS), the girl’s father and the suspect were hunting when a firearm allegedly discharged, striking the child.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting are the subject of an intensive police investigation. The young victim sustained severe injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital in a desperate attempt to save her life. Despite medical efforts, she was declared dead shortly after arrival. The death sent shockwaves through the local community.

Hospital personnel reported the incident to authorities, leading to the registration of a murder case. Investigators have since confiscated all firearms belonging to the suspect for forensic ballistic testing. Detectives are expected to scrutinise the handling of the firearm, safety procedures followed during the hunt, and the events that unfolded in the moments before the fatal shot was fired.

Police subsequently arrested the suspect, who is expected to appear before the Ficksburg Magistrate’s Court. While police have described the shooting as an alleged accidental discharge, legal experts note that a murder charge is often registered at the outset of such investigations to allow authorities to fully examine whether negligence, recklessness or criminal liability played a role in the death.

The tragedy has once again raised serious questions about firearm safety during hunting activities and the risks associated with the presence of children in environments where firearms are actively being used. As investigations continue, authorities are expected to rely on forensic evidence, witness statements and ballistic reports to determine exactly what happened.
