Bonnievale police attended a public hearing on the Children’s Amendment Bill on Wednesday 19 October in Caledon. Sergeant Sarah Julies, the social crime coordinator with members of the CPF, Youth desk one NGO and community worker attended the event. The purpose of the Amendment Bill is to amend the Children’s Act, 2005, so as to amend and insert certain definitions, to extend the children’s court jurisdiction, to further provide for the care of abandoned or orphaned children and additional matters that may be regulated, to provide for additional matters relating to children in alternative care and to provide for matters. Attendees and organizations were encouraged to participate in the public hearing on the Bill to the standing committee on social development for consideration. This was a great opportunity to raise concerns and to voice certain aspects regarding children’s rights and the obstacles that communities face on a daily basis. Dan Plato was the chairperson of the public hearing and here with hom is Rita Baadjies, a community worker in Bonnievale.
