Malmesbury police arrested a suspect involved in house robbery on Thursday (1 September) in Hawer Street, Malmesbury.

Police spokesperson Captain Marko Heydenrych said during the incident the complainant was at the premises to drop her child off for it is used as a day-care facility.

“As she turned to leave the premises a tall African male entered and instructed the occupants to keep quiet,” she said.

According to Heydenrych, the suspect showed them a firearm, and at that stage two other African males entered the premises and demanded the keys to the safe.

“The complainant and occupants of the house were then tied up and suspects fled the scene with a cellphone and keys,” she said. “Nobody was injured in the incident.”

The suspects fled the scene in a small yellow car, and the vehicle’s description was immediately broadcast to all relevant role-players. The vehicle was spotted a few hours later in Paarl and forced to the side of the road.

The driver of the vehicle was the only occupant and fitted the description of one of the suspects.

He was subsequently arrested and appeared before the Malmesbury Magistrates’ Court on 5 September on a charge of house robbery.

The two other suspects in the incident were still being sought at the time of writing.
