PRETORIA – A 34-year-old man has appeared in the Cullinan Magistrates’ Court charged with the murder of Economic Freedom Fighters Tshwane Region Two Secretary and Election Coordinator , who was shot dead at her home in June.
Sipho Lucky Mahlangu from Soshanguve faces charges of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances following the brutal killing of Dube at her Wallmansthal residence on 13 June.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority, Mahlangu and an accomplice broke into Dube’s home through a window during the early hours of the morning. The pair allegedly entered her bedroom and shot her in the head in the presence of her children before stealing her cellphone and fleeing the scene.
The breakthrough in the case came on 4 July when Dube’s daughter allegedly recognised Mahlangu at a taxi rank and alerted police, leading to his arrest by the Gauteng Political Killings Task Team.
Police investigators believe Mahlangu was a hired gun. The EFF in Gauteng has welcomed his arrest and confirmed that provincial leadership and members would attend court proceedings to monitor the case.
This was the second attempt on Dube’s life in 2026. In March, she survived an attack in which she was shot 11 times and spent several weeks in intensive care recovering from her injuries.
The EFF issued a statement mourning Dube’s loss and highlighting her dedication to the party. The brutal nature of the attack, carried out in front of her children, has shocked the community and raised concerns about political violence in the province.
Mahlangu made a brief appearance in court on 16 July, with the matter postponed to 23 July for a formal bail application. He remains in custody. Authorities are continuing their investigation and are searching for his accomplice.
The case has drawn attention to the work of the Gauteng Political Killings Task Team, which specialises in investigating politically motivated murders in the province.
