South Africa delivered a commanding performance at the 2025 UIPM Biathle, Triathle, and Laser Run World Championships, which concluded in spectacular fashion on 13 December after welcoming 1,600 entries from 34 nations.
The host nation fielded 500 athletes and dominated medal standings across all disciplines, establishing themselves as a global powerhouse in one of the most diverse and well-attended UIPM gatherings in recent history.
Athletes faced demanding conditions throughout the week, particularly during the Triathle events where rough and unpredictable seas tested competitors’ resolve. Despite these challenges, participants from across the globe demonstrated remarkable determination, delivering performances that captured the essence of elite international sport.

The Para division emerged as one of the most powerful stories, with participation surging by 300% compared to 2024, signalling rapid international expansion and deepening commitment to inclusivity. South Africa’s four-athlete Para contingent earned five gold and five silver medals under Bernie Manzoni’s guidance, demonstrating exceptional unity and technical excellence.
Para events delivered unforgettable moments, including wheelchair athletes being assisted into and out of the ocean by dedicated support teams, and visually impaired competitors racing while connected to guide runners by ribbons, listening and responding through directional guidance whilst maintaining complete shooting autonomy.

South Africa’s medal dominance proved comprehensive across all categories. In Biathle individual events, the hosts claimed 13 gold, 15 silver, and 18 bronze medals, significantly outperforming Egypt’s five gold, three silver, and one bronze. The Triathle delivered a perfect symmetry with South Africa securing 13 medals in each category, whilst Egypt managed six gold but lacked podium depth.
Laser Run represented Egypt’s strongest challenge, securing seven gold medals, but South Africa’s 10 gold, 11 silver, and 14 bronze demonstrated superior overall strength. Relay events across all disciplines reinforced South Africa’s superiority, though Egypt provided competitive resistance, particularly in Laser Run relays.
The championship’s success reflected meticulous organisation powered by dedicated volunteers whose professionalism ensured smooth operations throughout. Three medal categories were awarded: individual podium placements, team medals based on collective national entries, and mixed relay medals featuring female athletes completing the first half before tagging male counterparts.
With unmatched participation, exceptional competitive results, breakthrough Para inclusion, and world-class organisation, this year’s championships established themselves as one of the most impactful UIPM events in recent memory, setting high expectations for Portugal’s upcoming hosting duties.
