South Africa delivered a dominant performance on the first day of the UIPM World Championships, topping the medal table with a remarkable total of 16 medals.
Team South Africa have home ground advantage as the competition was launched in Mossel Bay. Athletes from 34 countries across the globe tackled the challenging beach and run course for the Biathle heats and Mixed Relay events across multiple age categories.
Biathle comprises run-swim-run sections, with a substantial stretch across the sand plus a steep uphill section, the course tested competitors thoroughly.
The mixed relays feature combined events where male and female athletes from the same country form a team, with each athlete completing exactly 50% of the course. When any country enters multiple teams, only a single team can reach the podium. The podium events typically showcase both males and females representing their respective countries.
Favourable coastal conditions and enthusiastic crowd support established the perfect foundation for what promises to be a record-breaking week for South African modern pentathlon.
The Opening Ceremony marked a historic moment as the UIPM introduced a ceremonial bell featuring an internal clock as a new global symbol for the Biathle/Triathle/Laser Run World Championships, mirroring the Olympic flame’s purpose and continuity.
Rob Stull, President of the UIPM, officially handed over the bell to Frans van Niekerk, President of SAMPA, highlighting South Africa’s role as the first host nation to launch this legacy item.

From this point forward, the bell will journey from one host nation to the next at future World Championships where organisers hold biathle, triathle, and laser run together—serving as a simple yet powerful symbol of unity and shared spirit within modern pentathlon worldwide.
The competition featured world-class racing from U9 through to Masters 70+, with several heats decided by narrow margins and standout performances particularly from young South African athletes.
