The Helderberg’s high-jumping sensation, Breyton Poole, has once again made his mark on the international stage, earning a silver medal at the Joensuu Motonet GP 2026 in Finland.
Competing in the World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze meeting, the Somerset West athlete showcased why he remains one of South Africa’s brightest stars in the sport.
With a clearance of 2,18 m, Poole secured his place on the podium, adding another accolade to his already impressive 2026 season. “It was a really great feeling knowing I had some good international competitors in the line-up,” he shared.
The result not only affirmed his abilities but also boosted his confidence for upcoming competitions.
Reflecting on his preparation, Poole highlighted the importance of mental and technical focus. “The performance in Finland gave me confidence after my last competition, knowing I can jump much higher in my next event,” he said. “I worked on being more technical in my run-up approach during training to execute it in competition.”
Competing internationally comes with its challenges, and Poole acknowledged the toll of constant travel and fatigue. “The entire tour was tough, but I focused on controlling what I could to perform at my best,” he explained.
Despite these obstacles, the experience has reinforced his belief in his ability to compete at the highest level.
Poole draws motivation from the privilege of representing South Africa abroad. “It’s an honour to do this sport internationally, and that alone drives me,” he said.
He also expressed gratitude for the support of his family, coach and fans. “Having my parents, brother and coach behind me is incredibly motivating. Seeing so many people support me on social media and share my journey is equally rewarding. I want to thank everyone for their encouragement.”
Looking ahead, Poole’s next challenge is the Lappeenranta Games in Finland on Saturday 18 July. Beyond that, his focus is on staying healthy for the remainder of the season and preparing for the World Championships in Beijing in 2027.
To young athletes aspiring to follow in his footsteps, Poole says: “Surround yourself with good, like-minded people and dream big. I couldn’t have imagined achieving what I have so far, but hard work has made it possible.”
With determination, talent and a strong support system, Poole continues to inspire as he reaches new heights.
