Sharks coach JP Pietersen praised his side’s set-piece work whilst acknowledging areas for improvement following their 21-15 victory over Cardiff at the Shark Tank on Friday evening.

The Durban-based franchise secured a crucial United Rugby Championship win despite humid conditions that made handling difficult throughout the match.

Strong start sets up victory

Pietersen’s side started brightly, racing to a 21-12 half-time lead through two quick tries. However, the coach was forced to make tactical changes when Cardiff fought back.

“We started the game fast, and obviously, Cardiff is a quality side,” Pietersen told reporters after the match. “They came right back at us and put us under pressure. We scored two quick tries, but then we just felt like we needed a change of momentum.”

The coach brought on a new front row of Ox Nche, Eduan Swart, and Vincent Koch towards the end of the first half, a move that proved decisive.

“We sent the front row on to give us that edge. And it came off. It was good to finish the half 21-12 up. It gave us lots of confidence for the second half,” Pietersen added.

Second-half struggles

Despite their commanding position, the Sharks failed to score in the second period, leaving Pietersen frustrated with missed opportunities.

“We took control of the game at the set-piece. We scrummed well, and we scrummed for penalties, and obviously the maul went well,” he said.

“When we got into the 22 in the first half, we scored tries. In the second half, we failed to convert. We were a bit sloppy in the territory and kicking game, and I wish we could’ve been better.”

Injury blow for newcomer

The victory was overshadowed by an injury to fullback Luan Giliomee, who had impressed in his debut start against Munster the previous week.

“Gilly coming off… it’s unlucky and unfortunate that this happened to him. It’s a setback, but I’m sure he’ll bounce back. It gives the next guy the chance to step up,” Pietersen said.

The extent of Giliomee’s injury remains unknown.

Pietersen viewed the match as valuable preparation ahead of upcoming away fixtures, describing it as “a good learning experience as we go on the road”.
