Durban — Northwood School proudly announces the outstanding achievements of ten of its leading mathematics students, who represented KwaZulu‑Natal in the prestigious South African Mathematics Team Competition. Organised by the South African Mathematics Foundation and sponsored by the Actuarial Society of South Africa, the event brought together the country’s brightest young minds for rigorous individual and team challenges.
Path to the National Stage
The learners earned their place in this competition after ranking among the top 100 in KwaZulu‑Natal during the second round of the South African Mathematics Olympiad. This distinction qualified them to compete nationally against elite teams from across South Africa.
Individual Excellence
Following the individual round, learners were allocated to teams based on their performance. Notably:
- Junior Team 1: Virat Maharaj and Joseph Andries (Top 10 nationally)
- Senior Team 1: Rahiel Luckan and Saiyen Moodley (Top 10 nationally)
- Junior Team 2: Levi Vermeulen
- Junior Team 3: Mitchell Courtney and Vheer Prithipal
- Senior Team 2: Hang‑Yuan Shih
- Senior Team 6: Jordan Theron
A highlight of the competition was Rahiel Luckan’s first‑place finish in the senior category, a remarkable achievement that underscores his talent and dedication.
Team Triumphs
In the team round, Northwood’s representatives continued to excel. AMESA Durban Junior Team 1 secured 3rd place nationally, while AMESA Durban Senior Team 1 achieved an impressive 2nd place in South Africa.
