Eskom Expo Celebrates Youth Innovation at Regional Science Fairs. The Eskom Expo for Young Scientists is set to celebrate youth innovation through 38 Regional Science Fairs across South Africa. It is offering learners a competitive platform to showcase their research, ideas, and problem‑solving skills.
This year, approximately 6,300 projects will be presented at the Regional Science Fairs. It also follows the success of 287 District Expos, in which 13,882 projects were showcased by 18,481 learners. These activities included workshops to strengthen scientific skills. Also compulsory District Expos where learners received expert guidance to refine their research investigations.
Participants at the Regional Science Fairs will engage with peers, educators, and professionals from diverse STEMI fields (science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and innovation), enhancing their critical thinking, communication, and presentation abilities.
Ms Mologadi Motshele, Acting CEO of the Eskom Development Foundation, said:
“We at Eskom are excited to see the next generation of young scientists advance to the Regional Science Fairs. These events showcase the diversity of research in our schools and highlight the issues that matter most to young people in their communities. Importantly, these projects reflect real‑world challenges and innovative solutions learners are developing to address them.”
Learners will also compete for prestigious awards, including Best Female Project, Best Innovation Project, Best Energy Project, and Best Development Project, sponsored by Eskom.
Parthy Chetty, Executive Director of Eskom Expo, added:
“The Regional Science Fairs spotlight young innovators, translating classroom learning into real‑world projects that address local challenges in energy, environment, and technology. They connect learners with teachers, universities, industry, and government, strengthening pathways into STEM careers and amplifying national skills development goals.”
With thousands of projects expected, top learners will earn the coveted opportunity to represent their regions at the Eskom Expo International Science Fair (ISF) in Gauteng at the end of September.
Judges from professional fields – including engineers, doctors, veterinarians, teachers, lecturers, researchers, scientists, and IT specialists – are encouraged to participate. Teachers can earn SACE CPD points, while scientists registered with SACNASP can earn CPD points through adjudication.
