Zwartkop ran riot at the first game of the Noord Suid, dismantling a struggling Bethlehem Voortrekker side 50-14 in what could have been an even more emphatic scoreline had the hosts shown better ball retention in the attacking third. The bonus-point victory keeps Zwartkop’s momentum building, whilst Trekkers sink deeper into crisis territory.

The men from Bethlehem arrived with plenty to prove but left with their tails between their legs, suffering yet another comprehensive defeat that raises serious questions about their season trajectory. Their defensive line held firm at the try-line on multiple occasions, but when your lineout is misfiring as badly as theirs was, you have no platform to attack from.

Zwartkop dominated, yet their clinical edge deserted them when it mattered most. Wave after wave of attacks broke down within five metres of the Trekkers line. It was frustrating viewing.

The standout performer in Zwartkop colours was flyhalf Tilon Baron, who orchestrated proceedings with the poise of a seasoned campaigner. Baron didn’t just manage the game , he dictated it. His ability to identify gaps in the defensive line created multiple opportunities for his outside backs, whilst his own five-pointer showcased his eye for the tryline. When your number 10 is firing on all cylinders like this, the opposition is always on the back foot.

The scoreline flatters Bethlehem to some extent. Had Zwartkop shown better hands in the final third, particularly in the opening 50 minutes, this could have been a cricket score. The hosts spilled possession with the line begging, either through poor handling or ambitious offloads that didn’t stick.

To their credit, Zwartkop tightened up their execution in the final quarter, stringing together multiple phases and finishing their chances with more composure. It was a glimpse of what this side is capable of when they marry their attacking intent with clinical finishing.

Dark days in Bethlehem

For Trekkers, this represents another sobering afternoon.

Their defensive organisation around the ruck was commendable at times, but you can’t build a winning formula on goal-line stands alone. The set-piece must improve dramatically, and they need to find some cutting edge with ball in hand if they’re to turn their fortunes around.
