The Virseker Noordvaal Plate division roars into life this Saturday when Zwartkop host Klerksdorp in what promises to be a fascinating opening-round clash between two contrasting outfits.
Zwartkop enter the league encounter as overwhelming favourites, and with good reason. The Pretoria-based school boast a high-flying 1st XV that has tasted defeat just twice in a brutal pre-season schedule that included the Noord Suid tournament, Kearsney Easter Festival, and the gruelling NWU Prestige series. That kind of preparation under match pressure has forged a battle-hardened squad ready to exploit home advantage.
“We have had a good build-up to the league, the boys have had plenty of game time and know exactly what is expected of them,” said David Gouws, Zwartkop’s 1st XV coach. “We need to take advantage of our home ground advantage. Because the division is so competitive, teams will find it difficult to travel.”
Gouws is under no illusions about the challenge ahead, despite his side’s form book. Klerksdorp arrive with dangerous weapons in their arsenal, and the home coach has identified specific threats that could derail Zwartkop’s opening fixture.
“They have a good team. We will have to watch out for their number eight and the back three,” Gouws warned. “We want to focus on playing hard for the full 70 minutes.”
That emphasis on a complete 70-minute performance speaks to the respect Zwartkop hold for the Noordvaal Plate division, a competition notorious for punishing complacency. With promotion-relegation battles adding extra spice to every fixture, no match can be taken lightly.
Klerksdorp’s preparation has been considerably less extensive than their hosts. The North West outfit have played sparingly in comparison, with victories over Potchefstroom Volkskool and Trio offset by defeats to Kempton Park and Pietersburg. A recent draw with Marais Viljoen suggests they’re finding their rhythm, but stepping onto Zwartkop’s turf presents an entirely different proposition.
The visitors know the odds are stacked against them at 1st XV level. Instead, Klerksdorp will need theirjunior teams to accumulate crucial points, where the promotion-relegation mathematics could prove more favourable. In school rugby’s multi-grade battle format, dominance across all age groups matters just as much as 1st XV heroics.
For both schools, Saturday represents the first genuine examination in the Virseker Noordvaal Plate division. Pre-season form counts for nothing once league points are on the line, and the unique pressures of this fiercely competitive division have a habit of producing unexpected results.
Zwartkop will back their pedigree and home comforts to deliver the opening win their preparation deserves. But Klerksdorp didn’t travel to Pretoria for a training run. If the visitors’ back three and combative number eight, Gerrit Koen, can ignite their game plan, and if Zwartkop’s concentration wavers, an upset remains within reach.
