The long road back begins with blood, sweat and forward battles as relegated sides chase resurrection
There’s a particular intensity that comes with playing in the Plate division when you’ve tasted life at the top table. It’s not just about winning, it’s about erasing the sting of relegation, proving the drop was a temporary setback, and clawing your way back to where you belong.
This weekend, the Virseker Noordvaal Cup’s second tier delivers exactly that narrative. Fallen giants testing themselves against established Plate operators. Forward battles that will be won in the trenches. And the unmistakable hunger that comes from teams with something to prove.
Montana vs Nelspruit: Respect before the war
When Nelspruit rock up to Montana on Saturday, they’ll arrive with momentum in their sails and a point to prove. Two matches, two victories, Oos Moot and fellow relegation victims Transvalia have already been dispatched.
But Montana, back on their home paddock, represent an entirely different proposition.
“Montana are in a good place, with solid coaches. We expect a massive forward battle, we will need to front up physically, especially in the set piece,” said MJ Mentz, Nelspruit’s director of rugby, laying out the challenge with brutal honesty. “We will need to control the tempo of the game. We have had a good run of results, but we know it is going to cost 70 minutes of blood and sweat to win away from home.”
Seventy minutes of blood and sweat. That’s the currency of Plate division rugby.
For AJ le Roux, Montana’s director of rugby, there’s an added layer of intrigue. “They are a well-coached team, MJ is one of the last coaches I played under,” Le Roux revealed. “We are excited to be back at home and the boys can’t wait for the match.”
The mutual respect between the two camps is palpable. Mentz acknowledging Montana’s coaching quality. Le Roux tipping his cap to his former mentor’s systems. But come Saturday afternoon, sentiment gets checked at the gate and respect is expressed through ferocious physicality.
This one will be won up front. Set piece dominance, breakdown supremacy, forward muscle that creates quick ball for the backs. Nelspruit need to impose themselves early and suffocate Montana’s home advantage before the crowd gets behind the hosts. Montana need to use that crowd energy, establish territorial dominance, and make Nelspruit earn every inch of ground.
Zwartkop vs Transvalia: Champions meet fighters
If Nelspruit arrive with two wins under their belt, Transvalia travel to NWU prestige series champions Zwartkop still searching for that elusive first Plate victory after going down to Nelspruit in their opener.
It’s a daunting assignment, taking on champions at their fortress, but Lloyd Greeff, Transvalia’s director of rugby, isn’t conceding anything before kick-off.
“We will need to be at our best to beat them at home,” Greeff acknowledged. “We showed fighting spirit away against Nelspruit, especially in the second half. Zwartkop will come hard at us in the first half. If we can put pressure on them from the start and use our opportunities, we will have a good chance.”
There’s tactical nous in that assessment. Greeff knows Zwartkop will try to blow them off the park early, use home advantage to establish a lead and suffocate Transvalia’s ambitions before they gain traction. The counter? Start fast, absorb the early pressure, and capitalise on the opportunities that inevitably arise.
Transvalia’s second-half showing against Nelspruit clearly gave Greeff belief. They didn’t fold when the going got tough. They fought back, showed character, and proved they belong at this level even if the result didn’t go their way.
For David Gouws, Zwartkop’s 1st XV coach, homework has been done and respect for the opposition is genuine.
“We are looking forward to a big match, they did well against Nelspruit, it is never easy to play Nelspruit away,” Gouws said. “We have done our homework, we believe we have what it takes to be victorious. Home ground advantage is massive in this competition, we are a full-strength side that is ready to play. It will be a tough match, Transvalia are known for never giving up, they are a tough team.”
That final line is crucial – “known for never giving up.” Greeff will have those words pinned to the changing room wall. When you’re relegated, fighting spirit becomes your identity.
Zwartkop have, home advantage, and a full-strength squad itching to prove their prestige series success wasn’t a flash in the pan. But Transvalia have the desperation of a side that knows every match is a step towards redemption or another week stuck in the wilderness.
