The Wesgrow series continues this weekend with Fichardtpark taking on Sentraal in a Bloemfontein derby while Goudveld welcome Trio from Kroonstad to Welkom. Fichardtpark are still undefeated in the Wesgrow series, claiming victories over Jim Fouche, Bethlehem Voortrekker and Trio. Sentraal are The Wesgrow series serves up a weekend of contrasting narratives as undefeated heavyweights clash in Bloemfontein whilst a struggling Goudveld outfit desperately seeks redemption in Welkom. Two fixtures, two wildly different stakes, one guarantee – Free State schoolboy rugby at its rawest.
Fichardtpark and Sentraal put perfect records on the line
Fichardtpark will lock horns with Sentraal in a Bloemfontein derby that promises fireworks, with both sides carrying unblemished records into the weekend. The collision of two unbeaten outfits raises the stakes to fever pitch, something has to give when these local rivals meet.
Fichardtpark have blazed through their Wesgrow campaign with ruthless efficiency, claiming scalps against Jim Fouche, Bethlehem Voortrekker and Trio. Their blend of forward power and backline threat has overwhelmed all comers, establishing them as the series’ form team.
Sentraal arrive with their own credentials, having dispatched Witteberg and Goudveld with authority. The men from Bloemfontein possess the firepower and tactical nous to match their rivals blow for blow.
Rohan Erasmus, Sentraal’s 1st XV coach, relishes the prospect of two attacking sides going toe-to-toe in derby warfare.
“I think it is going to be a good match, with both teams playing an attacking brand of rugby. We will keep each other guessing on the defence. It’s going to be a nailbiter, the ruck speed will be the decisive factor,” said Erasmus.
Ruck speed determining the outcome makes perfect sense. When two sides commit to expansive rugby, the team that recycles possession fastest gains precious seconds to exploit defensive disorganisation. Lightning-quick ball presentation and breakdown work will separate winner from loser.
The defensive chess match looms equally important. Both coaches will have spent hours studying opposition patterns, identifying weaknesses to exploit whilst shoring up their own vulnerabilities. The side that adapts fastest when their first defensive system gets breached will likely emerge victorious.
Trio target struggling Goudveld
Goudveld welcome Trio to Welkom in vastly different circumstances, with the hosts under siege and desperate for a breakthrough victory. The men from Welkom haven’t recorded a single win in the Wesgrow series, their campaign defined by mounting pressure.
Their solitary triumph this season came against Die Anker whilst on tour. Confidence has drained with each defeat, making the task of turning the tide ever more daunting.
Trio, meanwhile, arrive as clear favourites despite facing a tough fixture list. Their victory over a strong Diamantveld outfit demonstrated their quality and resilience under pressure. That result provides genuine belief heading into Welkom.
Yet Quintin Geldenhuys, Trio’s director of rugby, refuses to underestimate a wounded opponent desperate for redemption.
“It is very important to get the win as it is also the start of the Griffons league. I don’t think this is a match that we should take lightly we have had good preparation in the week, it is always tough to play away from home,” said Geldenhuys.
The Griffons league connection adds another layer of significance. This isn’t merely a Wesgrow series fixture – it represents the opening salvo in a separate competition that carries its own prestige and consequences.
Playing away from home against opponents with nothing to lose presents obvious dangers. Goudveld will throw everything at Trio, fuelled by the burning desire to salvage something from a troubled campaign. One moment of complacency from the visitors, and the upset becomes possible.
