The Wesgrow schools rugby competition roars back into action this weekend after a lengthy winter break, with the championship picture impossibly tight and every fixture carrying genuine title implications. In the pick of the weekend’s clashes, log leaders Trio welcome third-placed Sentraal to Kroonstad in what promises to be an absolute belter between two sides desperate to maintain their championship credentials.
Just five points separate first place from fifth on the Wesgrow table, transforming what was expected to be a two-horse race into a five-way battle that will go down to the wire across the final two rounds.
Sentraal need bounce-back victory
Sentraal started their Wesgrow campaign impressively, dispatching Witteberg, Goudveld and Fichardtpark with performances that suggested genuine title credentials. But consecutive defeats to Diamantveld and Jim Fouche have stalled their momentum and left them vulnerable heading into the season’s crucial final stretch.
Against Trio, the form team sitting atop the standings, Sentraal must rediscover the quality that characterised their early-season victories or watch their title hopes evaporate in Kroonstad.
“Trio will not make it easy for us at their home ground. Both teams have exciting backlines and the team that wins the tough forward battle will be on the front foot,” said Rohan Erasmus, Sentraal’s 1st XV coach. “We are having one of the best seasons that a 1st XV of Sentraal has had in a few years.”
Trio wary despite home advantage
Quintin Geldenhuys, Trio’s director of rugby, refuses to take anything for granted despite his side’s lofty league position and home advantage. The lengthy break between fixtures presents challenges of its own, with rhythm and cohesion needing to be rediscovered quickly.
“It is going to be a tough match. I think the hardest part is going to be how we regroup after the long break. I think it’s been seven or eight weeks that we haven’t played together as a team,” Geldenhuys admitted. “They are in the running for the title so it is an important match for us.”
Diamantveld face winless Goudveld
Second-placed Diamantveld should secure maximum points when they host Goudveld, who have endured a torrid Wesgrow campaign without registering a single victory. Diamantveld have lost just twice, making them genuine title contenders if results elsewhere fall favourably.
“We have the utmost respect for all our opponents. With only two matches left in the season, it is important that we focus on ourselves and finish the year strong,” said Vlos Molnar, Diamantveld’s 1st XV coach. “I am excited to see the players again after the long break. This match is extra special because it is our last home match of the year.”
Jim Fouche know what’s at stake
Jim Fouche travel to Bethlehem Voortrekker carrying championship ambitions and the brutal awareness that anything less than maximum points could end their title dreams before the final round arrives.
“With only two rounds remaining in the Wesgrow competition, we know exactly what is at stake. This weekend’s fixture is non-negotiable for us. Every point matters, and if we want to remain in contention, we have to produce a performance worthy of maximum points,” declared Neill Murphy, Jim Fouche’s 1st XV coach.
“Travelling to Voortrekker Bethlehem is never easy. They are a quality side, always difficult to beat at home, and we have a great deal of respect for the challenge ahead. That said, our focus remains firmly on ourselves. We have prepared well, we believe in our game plan, and now it comes down to executing it with discipline, intensity and accuracy.”
Witteberg host Fichardtpark in the weekend’s other fixture, with Fichardtpark still mathematically in the title race and desperate for points.
