Whilst the rest of the Virseker Noordvaal divisions still have semi-finals to navigate, the Bowl division has already set its stage for Saturday’s grand finale. Potch Gimnasium, the competition’s most unlikely finalists, will square off against an unbeaten Centurion outfit in a clash that pits resurgence against relentlessness.

This is David versus Goliath territory. Gimmies, the overwhelming underdogs, have clawed their way back from the abyss of a nightmare season. Centurion, meanwhile, march into the decider with their perfect record intact and belief coursing through their veins.

This one feels destined for folklore.

The final that almost was

Potch supporters came agonisingly close to witnessing an all-Potch decider when arch-rivals Volkies took on Centurion in the semi-final. The dream scenario was within touching distance, until the dying minutes, when Centurion snatched victory from the jaws of heartbreak and denied the Potchefstroom faithful their local derby showdown.

According to Christiaan Burger, rugby organiser at Centurion, it was a brutal arm wrestle that tested every ounce of his side’s resolve.

“They came hard at us, and we were behind for most of the match. We had the majority of the possession but they kept us out. I think tactically they were very good while we were poor. We kept our composure and the boys carried on fighting,” Burger admitted.

That composure, that refusal to buckle when trailing,speaks volumes about Centurion’s character. They’ve navigated an entire season without tasting defeat, but this semi-final may have been their toughest examination yet. They passed. Barely.

Gimmies: The comeback kings

If Centurion’s journey has been one of consistency, Gimmies’ path to the final reads like a scriptwriter’s fever dream. The men in blue from Potch endured a torrid start to the season, hemorrhaging five straight defeats as confidence drained and questions mounted.

A victory over Midstream College offered brief respite, a flicker of hope in the darkness. But the slide resumed immediately. Four more losses followed, including a painful defeat to arch-rivals Volkies that could have broken lesser sides completely.

Instead, it ignited them.

That loss to Volkies proved to be the turning point. Something clicked. Belief returned. The players started fighting for each other, for the badge, for pride. Gimmies went on an absolute rampage, reeling off four consecutive victories to storm into the final with momentum surging through their ranks.

Regardt Kleingeld, Gimmies’ director of rugby, can barely contain his pride.

“I’m very proud of our guys. Where we were and where we are now is very good. The players started believing, playing for each other and playing for the school. We didn’t have the easiest route to the finals. I think we are overwhelming underdogs in this match. We are happy to be in the finals, we will prepare well and play to the best of our abilities,” Kleingeld said.

Finals experience vs unbeaten swagger

This isn’t unfamiliar territory for Gimmies. Saturday’s decider will be their third successive Bowl final appearance. But recent history offers a cautionary tale. Last year, they marched through the entire league campaign undefeated, only to stumble at the final hurdle when silverware was within reach.

The scars from that defeat still linger. The hunger for redemption burns fierce.

Centurion arrive as the form side, unbeaten throughout their campaign and battle-hardened from their dramatic semi-final escape against Volkies. But finals are great equalisers. Pressure does strange things to perfect records.

Neither side will be taking anything for granted when the referee’s whistle pierces the air on Saturday. Gimmies have already defied expectations just by reaching this stage. Centurion have one final obstacle between them and an unblemished season crowned with silverware.

The Bowl final awaits. Redemption versus perfection. Let the battle commence.
