Midstream still have a chance to upset the applecart if their three teams still in the hunt for silverware can come good.

In one of the most delicious ironies schoolboy rugby has produced this season, Gimmies didn’t just help their own promotion cause at the weekend, they simultaneously threw Volkies a lifeline by beating the very teams threatening to drag their rivals into the relegation abyss.

Volkies survived by claiming a crucial victory over Brandwag, keeping their Bowl division status alive through their 1st XV’s advancement to the semi-finals. But they owe a debt of gratitude to their great rivals in blue, who narrowly defeated Hugenote in the 1st XV clash whilst also beating Die Anker in other age group matches.

Those results appear to have sealed the relegation fates. Hugenote and Die Anker, both eliminated from the playoffs with no teams remaining to score points, look destined for the drop at season’s end. The mathematics have turned brutal, and escape now seems beyond reach.

Volkies live to fight another day

For Potch Volkies, survival tastes sweet even if it arrived with an uncomfortable assist from their fiercest rivals. Their victory over Brandwag kept them in the Bowl division and propelled their 1st XV into the semi-finals, where a different challenge awaits.

High-flying Centurion stand between Volkies and a potential Bowl final appearance. The men from Gauteng look poised to grab the 1st XV division title, playing sublime rugby throughout the playoffs and carrying momentum that makes them overwhelming favourites.

But Volkies have already defied expectations simply by surviving this far. Win or lose against Centurion, Volkies have achieved their primary objective: avoiding relegation and living to fight another season in the Bowl division.

Gimmies: Helping enemies whilst chasing glory

The weekend delivered perfect results for Potchefstroom Gimmies, who are mounting a serious promotion challenge whilst inadvertently keeping their rivals Volkies afloat.

Gimmies demolished Hugenote in the 1st XV quarter-final, denying them crucial points and effectively ending their hopes of escaping relegation. They also beat Die Anker in u.14 and u.15 fixtures, further damaging another relegation candidate’s prospects.

Those victories served dual purposes. For Gimmies, they maintained momentum in the promotion race and kept three teams alive in the playoffs, 1st XV, u.15, and u.14 sides all advancing to semi-finals where they can continue accumulating points.

For Volkies, watching from the sidelines, those Gimmies victories were cause for celebration. Every point Gimmies denied Hugenote and Die Anker improved Volkies’ own relegation survival chances. The enemy of their enemy became, temporarily, their saviour.

The relegation picture: Hugenote and Die Anker face the drop

With no teams remaining in the playoffs, both Hugenote and Die Anker can no longer score points. That’s the brutal reality of the Virseker Noordvaal system, once you’re eliminated across all age groups, you’re frozen at your current points total whilst rivals continue accumulating.

Hugenote’s defeat to Gimmies in the 1st XV quarter-final proved terminal. Die Anker’s losses across multiple age groups sealed similar fates. Neither school can now influence their own destiny; they can only watch helplessly as the mathematics confirm what weekends results suggested, relegation awaits.

For proud rugby programmes accustomed to competing at Bowl level, the drop represents more than just playing in a lower division next season. It’s reputational damage, recruitment challenges, and the psychological burden of rebuilding from a lower base.

The mathematics become straightforward for Gimmies. If they win their last two games across all three remaining teams, semi-finals and then finals should they advance, they claim the Virseker Noordvaal Bowl title and secure promotion to the Shield division.

That’s six victories required: three in semi-finals, three in finals. Deliver those results, and Gimmies ascend to the next tier. Fall short, and Ermelo or another challenger could snatch promotion from their grasp.

Semi finals: Where dreams are made or broken
