Oakdale emerged victorious from an absolute arm-wrestle at Noord Suid, grinding out a hard-fought 27-19 victory over Noordheuwel in a match that was as much about defensive grit as attacking flair.
This was two sides going toe-to-toe in a brutal physical encounter that tested every player’s resolve and defensive systems to the limit.
Oakdale struck first in the seventh minute, finding precious space on the outside and exploiting it clinically. Winger Nathan-Lee Gordon needed no second invitation, racing into the corner to put the first five points on the board.
Noordheuwel had started brightly, finding a good rhythm and building phases, but Oakdale’s defensive line held firm, refusing to buckle under the early pressure.
The 14th minute brought the first reward for Noordheuwel’s persistence. They set up a driving maul that Oakdale defended superbly, but Noordheuwel showed relentless intent. After multiple attempts battering away at the line, Christopher Strauss finally managed to burrow over. Scores level at 5-5.
What followed was a defensive masterclass from both sides. The hits were flying in, defensive structures remained intact, and neither team was giving an inch. This was attritional rugby at its finest.
In the 23rd minute, Noordheuwel’s pack showed their power once more. Setting up another driving maul, they remained patient, building momentum before barrelling over to break the deadlock at 12-5.
Oakdale weren’t about to let Noordheuwel establish control. In the 30th minute, sustained pressure on the Noordheuwel line finally told. Dylan Jordaan fought over after wave upon wave of Oakdale attacks. The points didn’t come easily, but they came nonetheless. At 12-12, it was all square heading into the sheds.
The second stanza became a tactical chess match, both sides probing for weaknesses but finding none. Defences dominated, and clear-cut opportunities were scarce.
Eventually, Oakdale found the breakthrough, edging ahead 17-12 before extending their advantage to 20-12. The men from Riversdal were starting to find gaps where none existed earlier.
The 60th minute brought the crucial score. Oakdale’s big forwards crashed repeatedly into the Noordheuwel defensive line, and eventually, the numbers game caught up with the Krigersdorp outfit. They simply ran out of bodies to throw into the defensive line, and Nathan-Lee Gordon pounced to bag his brace. At 27-12, Oakdale had daylight.
But Noordheuwel refused to surrender. In the 67th minute, eighthman, JB Blount produced a brilliant line break, slicing through the Oakdale defence and creating the platform for Llewellyn Lourens to cross the whitewash. At 27-19, they’d given themselves a sniff with time running out.
However, time was the one thing Noordheuwel didn’t have. The siren sounded, confirming Oakdale’s 27-19 victory in what was an absolute war of attrition.
This was tough, physical rugby that won’t win any beauty contests, but both sides can hold their heads high.
