The main event of day two at Noord Suid, delivered exactly what it promised, pure, unfiltered intensity. Affies survived a spirited Oakdale challenge to claim a hard-fought 28-17 victory. The Witbulle showcased their ability to play both power and finesse rugby, weathering sustained pressure and even a spell down to 14 men before emerging triumphant. Kyle van Staden produced a moment of pure magic that will have the Pretoria faithful talking for weeks.

This wasn’t just the marquee fixture on paper, it delivered the drama to match.

Five minutes in, Oakdale made their brute force count. Sustained pressure on the Affies line eventually told as Bernard Badenhorst powered over. 7-0 to the Riversdal side, and the underdogs had landed the first blow.

But championship teams respond immediately.

The eighth minute brought an Oakdale lineout overthrow, a costly error at this level. Affies pounced on the loose ball and attacked with clinical precision. After stringing together multiple phases, Francois de Beer powered over to level proceedings at 7-7. Oakdale weren’t at the races with their lineouts, only being able to win 55% of them.

Affies looked to exploit the wider channels, probing for gaps across the width of the pitch. But Oakdale’s cover defence proved equal to the challenge, scrambling brilliantly to shut down potential breaks.

The Witbulle can play both the power game and the finesse game, that versatility makes them so dangerous. When the moment arrived, they struck with devastating effect.

Kyle van Staden, Affies’ fullback, produced a moment of pure magic. Accelerating into space, he beat three defenders with footwork and pace that left them grasping at shadows before dotting down under the posts. 14-7 to Affies, and the crowd erupted.

The 27th minute brought Oakdale a lifeline. Caleb Williams slotted a penalty to cut the deficit to 14-10. Game firmly in the balance.

Three minutes later, Affies extended their advantage through brilliant attacking play. Estian Marx ran a superb line to cut the Oakdale defence. They got a hand to him, but his leg drive proved unstoppable, carrying him over the line for a crucial score. 21-10, and Affies had breathing room.

Oakdale refused to buckle. Dylan Jordaan made a brilliant linebreak before offloading to Andre van der Merwe, who came up just short. He popped it up to a supporting player, but the cover defence bundled him into touch.

The halftime whistle sounded with Affies leading 21-10. The contest remained very much alive.

The 46th minute brought an unusual score. Marc-Hein Fourie, Oakdale’s fullback, joined a maul, set up in midfield and somehow emerged to dot down. 21 to 17, Oakdale were right back in this battle.

The pressure mounted. Affies found themselves down to 14 men at one stage, forced to defend their slender lead with a numerical disadvantage.

Controversy and closure

The 60th minute brought the crucial score, and controversy. Juan Ferreira ran a hard line to dot down under the sticks after receiving a pass from Fourie Roberts. Some fans threw their arms in the air, calling it forward. The referee disagreed, and the try stood.

29 – 17 to Affies. That score proved decisive.

The Witbulle held firm through the closing stages, absorbing everything Oakdale threw at them despite their reduced numbers. When the final whistle sounded, Affies had survived the storm.
