A cold Bethlehem can’t cool Afgri week intensity

A bitter Bethlehem chill couldn’t cool the intensity as the Afgri Provincial Week continued into the U17 division on day one, serving up four contests that ranged from one-sided demolitions to nail-biting finishes. This prestigious tournament serves as the critical talent identification pathway for U16, Grant Khomo and U18 Craven Week squads, drawing provincial teams from across the country.

The Sharks invitational side fired the opening warning shot, dismantling the Cheetahs 47-15 in a performance that married brutal physicality with devastating running rugby. The KwaZulu-Natal outfit scored try after try, overwhelming their Free State opponents with a brand of rugby that was equal parts brawn and brilliance. The Cheetahs had no answers as the Sharks ran riot in the cold conditions.

Bulls overwhelm Valke in defensive masterclass

The Bulls delivered a clinic in defensive dominance against the Valke, racing to a commanding 26-7 halftime lead built on ferocious tackling that didn’t just stop the opposition, it drove them backwards. The Pretoria boys were relentless, suffocating the Valke’s attacking ambitions with line speed and bone-rattling collisions.

To their credit, the Valke refused to surrender, dazzling the crowd with some brilliant finishes that showcased genuine attacking flair. But the Bulls were simply too strong across the park, eventually putting their opponents to the sword 38-21 in a result that flattered the Valke’s resilience more than it reflected the contest’s balance.

Leopards hold off Griffons fightback

The Leopards and Griffons served up the firecracker encounter everyone anticipated, delivering first-half fireworks with end-to-end running rugby that had spectators gasping. The North West side edged ahead 15-7 at the break, but the Griffons weren’t about to bend the knee quietly.

The Leopards extended their advantage through brilliant support play, but poor decision-making late nearly cost them dearly. The Griffons capitalised on those errors to run in a final try, but the Leopards held on for a 30-21 victory that was closer than they’d have liked.

Sharks edge Pumas in day ending thriller

The final match delivered the tightest finish of the day, with the Sharks U17 outfit edging the Pumas 17-14 in a contest that went down to the wire. The Sharks exploded from the opening kickoff, crossing within five minutes to establish early dominance.

But the Pumas defended with ferocious commitment and refused to fold. After a bruising battle, the Sharks walked away with the victory but only just. The Pumas can hold their heads high after pushing one of the tournament favourites to the brink.

Day one of the U17 division delivered quality and intensity. The talent identification scouts will have plenty to chew over.
