Day one of the Afgri Provincial Week served up precisely what schoolboy rugby fans crave, heart-stopping finishes, shock results, and defensive masterclasses that had coaches tearing their hair out. The U15 division kicked off this morning with three contests that refused to follow the script, delivering edge-of-the-seat theatre from first whistle to last.
Pumas edge Griquas in gut wrenching finale
The Griquas will be nursing wounds tonight after suffering the cruelest of defeats to the Pumas in a match that went down to the wire. Trailing late, the Northern Cape outfit launched one final assault and crashed over at the death, sparking wild celebrations on the touchline. But schoolboy rugby is merciless, the conversion to draw level sailed agonisingly wide, handing the Pumas a victory that felt equal parts earned and stolen. It’s the sort of finish that builds character or breaks hearts, depending on which side of the posts you stand.
Leopards spring major upset over fancied Sharks
The shock of the day belonged to the Leopards, who squeaked past a highly rated Sharks outfit 10-5 in a result that left pundits scrambling to reassess their predictions. The KwaZulu-Natal side arrived in Bethlehem with serious credentials, they’d dismantled an equally fancied Bulls side just weeks ago, but found themselves completely dominated by the North West boys throughout.
The Leopards controlled territory, won the collisions, and bossed the breakdown, yet execution errors in the attacking third cost them dearly. They should have put the match to bed comfortably, but couldn’t convert dominance into points. The Sharks, starved of possession and territory, used their limited opportunities clinically to stay within striking distance. Handling errors repeatedly snuffed out their significant attacking threat, leaving the Durban contingent kicking themselves over what might have been. Sometimes rugby rewards efficiency over enterprise, today was one of those days.
Bulls outlast Griffons in arm wrestle
The Bulls and Griffons served up a completely different spectacle, a brutal, attritional slog that epitomised schoolboy forward battle at its purest. Halftime arrived with the scoreboard reading 3-3, neither side able to crack the opposition’s defensive wall. Penalty goals were the only currency in a first half defined by ferocious tackling and breakdown brutality.
The Bulls found another gear after the break, leveraging strong set-piece dominance to unlock the Griffons’ defence. They capitalised ruthlessly on their scrum and lineout superiority, eventually running out 22-8 winners. The Griffons refused to buckle entirely, running in a brilliant long-range try to cut the deficit and restore some pride. It was a performance built on guts and graft—precisely what you want from schoolboy provincial rugby.
