Three pupils were stabbed in a classroom altercation at AZ Berman High School in Tafelsig on Wednesday (10 September).

According to Mitchell’s Plain Police Station commander Brig Brian Muller the incident occurred at about 12:20, when an argument broke out in a Grade 10 classroom.

A male learner allegedly used a screwdriver to stab his three classmates.

Paramedics treated the injured pupils at the scene before transporting them to hospital. One victim was taken to Groote Schuur Hospital after sustaining wounds to his shoulder and back.

In the chaos two other learners suffered medical emergencies, one an asthma attack and another an epileptic seizure. Both were also attended to by medical staff.

Muller said officers sought the offender, who had fled the school, in Tafelsig and located and apprehended him. He was charged and appeared in court on Friday morning. Muller said the principal thanked authorities for their swift response.

The school counsellor also attended to learners at the scene.

Yesterday (Thursday 11 September) Metro Police officers recovered an unlicensed firearm in Tafelsig, just minutes after a shooting incident. Around 21:00 officers on patrol heard gunfire in Sharon Road and spotted a man running with what appeared to be a firearm.

After pursuing him on foot they arrested the 23-year-old as he tried to scale a fence. Officers recovered a pistol with its serial number filed off and four rounds of ammunition. He was detained at Mitchell’s Plain Police Station and faced charges of possession of a prohibited firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.
