Police nab suspect after fatal shooting of a 52-year-old man, investigation ongoing


GQEBERHA – Police in KwaZakhele have made a significant breakthrough in the brazen fatal shooting of a 52-year-old man in Zwide township, arresting a suspect and recovering the firearm.

Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, spokesperson for the Eastern Cape police, said members reacted promptly after receiving information, leading to the arrest shortly after the shooting incident, which occurred at approximately 13:30.

“SAPS members immediately launched a search for the suspect and their rapid response led to the arrest of a 33-year-old man, and they recovered an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in the suspect’s possession,” said Gantana. She said officers who responded to a shooting complaint at a residence on 1st Avenue in Zwide, discovered the victim already dead at the scene.

Gantana said the Eastern Cape Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata also attended the crime scene. The deceased’s identity has been withheld.

“The victim had sustained fatal gunshot wounds,” said Gantana, adding that a murder docket has been opened at SAPS KwaZakhele for further investigation. She said the suspect faces charges including murder, possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition. The suspect is expected to appear in the New Brighton Magistrates’ Court soon.

Gantana said police investigations are ongoing into the fatal shooting of the victim, including the motive.

In a statement issued, Police Commissioner Ncata has commended the members for their swift action that led to the arrest and recovery of the illegal firearm.

“Their rapid response demonstrates our unwavering commitment to bringing violent criminals to book. I commend the KwaZakhele members for their professionalism, dedication, and teamwork in effecting this arrest within such a short space of time,” he said. Ncata added:

“We remain resolute in our fight against violent crime and will continue to pursue those who threaten the safety and security of our communities.”
