South African Police Service officers have arrested several people for looting and attempted looting during nationwide demonstrations on Tuesday, with law enforcement maintaining a high alert status across the country.
The Ministry of Police confirmed the arrests were made from the early hours of Tuesday morning, with police responding to isolated incidents of looting reported in parts of South Africa.
Despite these incidents, police operations have proven effective in maintaining order, with demonstrations remaining largely peaceful across the country.
Police deployments have been heightened to ensure public safety, protect businesses and critical infrastructure, and maintain law and order. Officers on the ground have received instructions to act swiftly and decisively against anyone engaging in criminal activities, including looting, attempted looting, public violence, malicious damage to property, intimidation, or any other unlawful conduct.
Acting Minister of Police Firoz Cachalia called on citizens to exercise their constitutional rights responsibly.
“We urge citizens to exercise their constitutional rights responsibly and to ensure that demonstrations remain peaceful and lawful,” Cachalia said. “Those who choose to exploit the marches to commit criminal acts will face the full might of the law. Police will continue to identify, arrest, and prosecute all those responsible for criminal conduct.”
Law enforcement continues to monitor the planned marches taking place nationwide, with officers remaining on high alert throughout the day.
