Cape Town police said no arrests have been made yet in connection with the murder of a 31-year-old father who was shot and killed after dropping his child at a school in Belgravia on Tuesday 6 October.
According to reports, the victim had just dropped his child off at Heatherdale Primary when unidentified gunmen approached him and opened fire.
He sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his face and upper body.
Western Cape provincial police spokesperson Capt FC van Wyk said the motive for the attack is believed to be gang-related.
Meanwhile, to curb serious and violent crime and following recent attacks on police officials, integrated law enforcement operations were conducted in Athlone on Friday 9 October.
The joint operation, conducted under the banner of Operation Prosper Karabo, involved members of the South African Police Service, the South African National Defence Force and City of Cape Town law enforcement agencies.
The operation targeted criminal activity in an area known as Die Vlei.
Operational technology, including drones, Automated Licence Plate Recognition and facial recognition systems, was used to assist members in tracing wanted suspects and disrupting drug-related activities.
The operation resulted in the arrest of nine suspects for various offences.
Four men were arrested in connection with a recent attack on police officials, while one man was arrested in connection with a double murder in August this year in the Athlone policing precinct.
One suspect was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and was subsequently linked to a murder case registered in November 2025.
Two suspects were arrested for dealing in drugs, while one undocumented foreign national was arrested on drug-related charges. Another suspect was arrested for the illegal possession of ammunition.
Items confiscated during the operation included one 9mm pistol, one pistol magazine, 76 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 37 sachets of crystal methamphetamine (tik) and three mandrax tablets.
In a parallel traffic enforcement operation, 15 suspects were arrested for contravening road traffic regulations, Western Cape police spokesperson Col Andre Traut said.
Eight vehicles were impounded, and traffic fines totalling R739 020 were issued.
“Western Cape police management has welcomed the strong cooperation between the participating law enforcement agencies, emphasising that joint, intelligence-driven operations remain critical in addressing violent crime, disrupting criminal networks and improving the safety of communities.”
The suspects are expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court once they have been charged.
